October is Dyslexia Awareness Month around the world, and Dyslexia BC joins organizations internationally in using this month to raise awareness, share information and help people better understand dyslexia. We follow the international awareness calendar promoted by the European Dyslexia Association, which recognizes October as Dyslexia Awareness Month, the first full week of October as Dyslexia Awareness Week, and October 8 as International Dyslexia Day.
In 2022, Dyslexia BC was also among the organizations supporting international efforts to have the United Nations formally recognize October 8 as World Dyslexia Day. An event was held at the United Nations in New York, where advocates, organizations and people with lived experience, including Dylan Douglas, shared their experiences and called for greater recognition of dyslexia.
We would love your help building dyslexia awareness here in BC! There are so many ways you can get involved, and it doesn't have to be complicated. Put up a Dyslexia Awareness poster in your workplace lunchroom, have a bake sale, lemonade stand or hot dog sale, and donate the funds to Dyslexia BC, or use them to help your school library purchase decodable books or a few more audiobooks. Join one of our online events, enter our awareness contest, share information on social media, or come up with your own way to help spread the word. We have printable posters and information available on our website to help you get started.
And please send us photos of what you are doing! We love seeing how people across BC are getting involved, and every year we put together a video at the end of October to celebrate the many ways our community has helped build awareness.
Why does awareness matter? Because 1 in 5 people have a learning disability, and dyslexia is the most common type of learning disability. The more people understand dyslexia, the more we can break down the barriers, misconceptions and stigma that people with dyslexia experience. We want to help make BC a more accessible place for children, youth and adults with dyslexia. Awareness is an important part of making that change happen.
